I have just clicked the “Submit Order” button to buy a brand new PC and I am so happy about it I could just fucking explode.
About halfway through June, my PC died thanks to Abit installing cheap ass, defective capacitors from some Taiwanese company on the motherboard. Those capacitors swelled up, burst and leaked corrosive goo all over the motherboard. Here is a picture of the capacitors that failed.
You can read about the problem of defective capacitors and what caused it at BadCaps.net. The short story is, some Taiwanese company ripped off a capacitor electrolyte formula from a competitor but didn’t realize that what they had stolen was a defective design. They manufactured millions of faulty capacitors before anyone realized there was a problem. I’d really love to set fire to those assholes.
I didn’t have the money to replace the PC (thanks to the asshole Republicans and their corporate sponsors on Wall St who completely fucked up the US economy) and it was a year past the warranty expiration date. Since I couldn’t replace the PC, I had to dig an old one out of the closet. And I do mean *old*.
This PC is – literally – 9 years old. It’s a Dell Optiplex GX100, with a 600MHz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM and a horrible, integrated Intel 82810 DC-100 video adapter. It is so slow that I risk having a psychotic episode any time I try to do anything with it. It takes a full minute to load Firefox and it turns YouTube into a damned slideshow.
I finally couldn’t take it any more. I had to swallow my pride and bum some money from family. I spent the last two days deciding on parts and configured a very decent gaming rig at CyberPower PC Inc. I just finished submitting the order.
Enough babbling, here’s the hardware porn:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Quad-Core (@ 3,000MHz)
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465 1GB 16X PCIe (EVGA Superclocked)
HDD: 500GB SATA-II
RAM: 4GB DDR3/1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (I wanted more but couldn’t afford it)
Motherboard: GigaByte GA-770T-USB3 AMD 770 Chipset Support DDR3 Ultra Durable 3 Socket AM3
PSU: 700 Watts – XtremeGear Power Supply
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Freebie: Mafia II (Hell yeah! I loved the first Mafia 8 years ago.)
This beast is considerably faster than my old PC (which was itself pretty damned fast; I spent two grand on it four years ago). Compared to this puny, little thing I’m on now, it might as well be a supercomputer from the Star Trek universe. You better believe I’ll be F5’ing the UPS tracking page every 30 seconds for the next week or so. I might very possibly make a mess in my pants when the delivery truck pulls up in the driveway.
