It’s Okay To Be Happy That Osama Is Dead

May 2, 2011 at 7:04 PM (Uncategorized) (, )

I have been seeing a considerable amount of hand-wringing and outright scowling about the widespread celebration of the fact that my country just killed a man and dumped his filthy corpse into the middle of the ocean.

You will not find me doing either of these things. I am very happy that Bin Laden is dead and have no guilt for cheering when I heard the news. In fact, since it was a Navy SEAL that killed him, I will be buying a beer for the next sailor I see.

There is nothing wrong with feeling that way. A monster has been slain and it is good news for all of humanity.

Good Riddance, Asshole

May 2, 2011 at 1:06 AM (Uncategorized) ()

Osama Bin Laden is no more, brought down like a coward, reportedly cowering behind a woman when a US Navy SEAL put an American-made bullet into his addled brain.

Good. Fucking. Riddance.

Navy SEALs being a covert ops unit, we probably won’t learn the name of the particular sailor who fired the shot for 20 years or more, so I’m buying a beer for the next person I see wearing a Navy uniform.

It seems a little strange to cheer at the news of someone dying in a gun battle, but I don’t feel the least bit guilty in this case. Mark Twain Clarence Darrow said it best: “I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.”

How do I get rid of this stupid Steam prompt?

April 26, 2011 at 3:40 PM (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

When I installed Fallout New Vegas last year, I was forced to allow Steam to be installed. I don’t like Steam and didn’t want it dirtying up my hard drive but the idiots at Bethesda Softworks decided to foist this garbage software on all their PC customers, so there was no choice but to let it install. Once New Vegas was installed and running, I promptly set Steam to offline mode, wiped the stench of it off my tainted hard drive as best I could and have tried to ignore Steam ever since.

Unfortunately, there is no way to start New Vegas without also starting Steam and Steam refuses to simply load quietly and let me get on with it. It forces me to dismiss this annoying prompt every time it loads:

Steam Nag Prompt

I hate this prompt

Can someone please tell me how to either make New Vegas load without Steam or how to load Steam without that damned prompt? I’m sick of seeing it every time.

Put Down The Kool-Aid and Step Away From The Echo Chamber

January 7, 2011 at 8:26 PM (Uncategorized) (, , )

Many people on the left are angry today over the news that President Obama has named Bill Daley to be his next White House Chief of Staff. I have my own objections to him but that’s not what I want to talk about here.

What I want to talk about are the people defending the decision to hire Bill Daley.

Can We All Agree That It’s Not Racist To Be Disgusted By Animal Cruelty?

December 30, 2010 at 11:01 PM (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Michael Vick.

I could stop right there if I wanted. Just saying the name is enough to piss off most people. President Obama, no stranger to foot-in-mouth syndrome, did exactly that recently and he reignited an issue that should have been argued to exhaustion a year ago. And so, here we are again, arguing about Michael Vick and animal cruelty.

Let me get this out of the way before I go any further, just to make it clear which side I’m on. I think Michael Vick is a monster. He committed horrible crimes and I am disgusted to see him living it up as a celebrity. If you were looking for a balanced opinion of the Vick topic, you will be disappointed here.

The NFL’s decision to let Michael Vick play again and the Philadelphia Eagle’s decision to sign him is reprehensible and shameful. On the other hand, the Humane Society of the United States has agreed to work with Vick to educate people about the evils of dogfighting. So let Vick go to work for the Humane Society and do that full time. That should be his redemption, not going on to be a sports hero.

That’s my opinion of Michael Vick and his post-prison life.

Bethesda Softworks Flips Bird At PS3 And PC Gamers

October 18, 2010 at 3:27 PM (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

Bethesda Softworks has decided to tell all Playstation and PC gamers to go fuck themselves just one day before the North American release of Fallout: New Vegas. Bethesda has announced that a downloadable expansion will be released for Christmasbut only for the Xbox version. Apparently, money from Playstation and PC gamers just isn’t green enough for them.

All I can think to do is return the favor and say Fuck You right back at Bethesda.

This is probably a timed exclusive, meaning there will be a later release for PS3 and PC versions. I’ll buy New Vegas tomorrow, because it was made by Obsidian but the expansion is made by as well as published by Bethesda. I’ve decided that I won’t buy any expansions for it, although I definitely was planning to before I read this news. I’ll just get the DLCs for free from you-know-where.

Fuck those people at Bethesda. That middle finger they’re waving at their customers can wave in both directions.

Bizarre Complaint Against Google Filed With FTC

October 8, 2010 at 12:07 AM (Uncategorized) (, , )

A former employee of the Federal Trade Commission has filed a complaint with the FTC against Google for allegedly engaging in deceptive trade practices. In his complaint [PDF], Chris Soghoian states that Google’s search engine deliberately passes along HTTP referer headers to third-party website administrators, despite having the technical ability not to do so and in violation of Google’s privacy policy.

[Note: The correct spelling is “referer” not “referrer.” The word is a technical term and has always been spelled that way.]

He suggests that the FTC should, among other things, order Google to stop passing referer headers to third parties and require them to have a third party verify their privacy safeguards once a year for the next 20 years.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most bizarre privacy complaints I’ve ever seen.
